OTSU, Japan (AFP) - - World silver medallist Mubarak Hassan Shami of Qatar put on a late spurt in the last eight kilometres to beat Eritrea's Yared Asmeron in the Lake Biwa marathon on Sunday.
Shami, also the Asian Games gold medallist, put his foot on the gas after the 36 kilometre mark to leave Asmeron in his wake and crossing the finishing line in two hours, eight minutes 23 seconds. It was Shami's sixth victory out of seven starts.
Asmeron clocked 2:08:34, closely followed by Japan's Satoshi Osaki, who gave himself a good chance of qualifying for the Beijing Olympics with his third place finish in 2:08:36.
"It was very windy and difficult," said Shami, 27. "All my training is very hard, that's why I was able to run very strong."
Asmeron moved up the pace soon after 30km, but Shami followed him closely before pushing for victory.
Meanwhile, Osaki said: "I just tried to run at the end for qualifying for the Beijing Olympics. I felt comfortable at the beginning, but I started to feel it was too fast after 20km."
